I am new to wikitree. I was using ancestry as my starting family tree. Started putting in tree in wiki until a person matched and then filled in the rest in wiki for me.

From ancestry there is a birth record in Massachusetts vital town and records 1620-1988 for Mehitable Stebens (spelling on record) born in Leicester, Massachusetts on 10 April, 1721 with father of Joseph Stebens and Mary Stebens.

From ancestry Mehitable Stebbins shows a marriage record to Stephen Bennit (spelled in source) from Connecticut church record abstracts 1630-1920. Has the marriage date of September 23, 1736.

Not sure if same people. This would make this Mehitable a little over 15 years old when married. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I’ve been trying to figure this one out too. The age is a problem, assuming the dates are correct. But also the locations of a Leicester born Mehitable and a Connecticut born Stephen. That’s quite a distance for them to have met.

I don’t have any answers, only questions. I don’t think the current evidence is enough to conclude anything. One thought is that Mehitable was born with a different last name, married a Stebbins, who died shortly thereafter, THEN she married Stephen Bennett. That might explain the issues with all the Mehitable Stebbins.

The only Mehitable Stebbins' listed in The Stebbins genealogy, by Greenlee, Ralph Stebbins are as follows:

Mehitable Stebbins, wife of Stephen Bennet, can’t be the daughter of Joseph Stebbins and Rebeca (Colton) Stebbins. She is not listed in the list of children in the Stebbins Genealogy by Greenlee, and would have had to have been born in Springfield, Massachusetts.

But, she also can’t have been born in Leicester, Massachusetts to Joseph Stebbins and his wife Mary, as per the Leicester vital records. That says she was born in 1721, which would make a 1731 marriage to Stephen Bennett in Stonington, Connecticut highly improbable, being in the wrong area and the fact that she would only be 10 years old.

Which leaves the problem of where this Mehitable Stebbins came from. I don’t have an answer for that as of yet.

Mehitable's spouse Stephen Bennett-7450 already has a wife named Mehitable Stebbins (1709-1782) who appears to be a completely different person. Please add documentation to support why this Mehitable Stebbins is his correct wife. Thanks!

I agree, Kay (see my comment above). Do you have more info on the 1709-1782 Mehitable?

could Mary be Rebecca's second name?

Mehetebell Stebens, Massachusetts Births and Christenings, 1639-1915 source:

I believe this is Mehetibel's mother; the handwritten record states she was married to a Stebbins

Stebbins-1153 and Stebbins-641 appear to represent the same person because: same name and spouse.
