Biography

Birth

Sarah Steel's birth was recorded 22 October 1729 in Richmond County, Virginia. [1] [2] She was the daughter of Samuel Steel and Katherine Hammond.

Marriage

Her marriage to Sampson Woodall is indicated by the births of some of their children listed in the Douglas Register, Goochland County, Virginia. (Sally, 1756; John, 1758; Samuel, 1761 and Jacob, 1763) [3] The births of the rest of the children of Sampson and Sarah were not recorded in the St James Northam Parish Register leading to the presumption Sampson was living in the portion of Goochland County that became Charlotte County in 1761. The subsequent division of the parish meant the births of their remaining children (Elizabeth about 1766, James S. about 1770, William about 1770, and Susanna about 1775) would have been recorded in a different parish.

Residence

Sarah's husband Sampson Woodall sold his land in Goochland County by 1762 [4] and bought 200 acres in Charlotte County, Virginia in 1779. [5] This would have been where the family resided in 1782.

Family

The complete family for Sampson and Sarah included 9 persons as shown in Charlotte County Virginia tax records for 1782. There were a total of nine persons in Sampson's household and seven of them were children.[6]

Death

Sarah died after 1809 when she was mentioned in a deed. Sampson Woodall to his son, William Woodall, on the condition the son William or his heirs support and maintain Sampson & his wife, Sarah Woodall, as long as they both shall live, "in the manner to which they have been accustomed to living"...all land & plantation where Sampson now lives, containing 179 acres all cattle and household furniture. Aug 20, 1809.[7] The 1810 census for Charlotte County, Virginia has only one Woodall household, Sarah's son William Woodall (age 26-44), and there is no female in the proper age group to be Sarah.[8] Under the conditions set forth in the earlier deed regarding Sampson's property his son William was supposed to take care of Sarah until she died so while she might have been living in another county with some of her other children it seem most likely she would have remained in William's household. Some descendants say she was buried near Cullen, Charlotte County, Virginia.
