3-23-03 Dear Susan Kimura,
Searching for full names (first and middle), birth dates, and any information on William, Moses and James Steele, Jr. of New Castle Co., DE. These were three of at least eight children born to James Steele, Sr. (? - 1750/51) and Mary Alexander (Bef. 1718 - Aft. 1790). James Steele, Sr.'s father was John Steele, Yeoman of New Castle Co., DE. Mary Alexander's parents were James Alexander (c1652 - 1717) of New Minster, Cecil Co., Maryland and Mary Steele, (sister of the above James Steele, Sr. and daughter of John Steele of New Castle Co., DE.) The other five known children of James Steele, Sr. and Mary

Alexander were: Alexander (1730 - 1783) m Rachael; Mary Steele m James Alexander (1684/85 - ?), her 1st cousin, once removed; John Steele (1730 - 1784) m Miss. Allen; Isaac Steele (1732 - 1803) m Grissel Dixon (1750 - 1848); and Aaron Steele (1740 - 1795) m 1st. Violet Alexander (1743 - 1783).

Could William, Moses or James Steele, Jr. have the name Alexander in his full name? My fifth great grandfather was Alexander Steele, Sr. (1735 - 1808) of Bedford/Campbell Co., Virginia, who married Elizabeth Carson Helm in 1758.

Searching for possible connection between my Alexander Steele, Sr. and the above Steele family. Any help appreciated.

My above James Steele of New Castle Co. Delaware, was also in Philadelphia for a while. In researching Pennsylvania records, I did find another James Steele in Philadelphia and he was from Kent County, Delaware. Both of these James Steeles lived about the same time period and were from different counties in Delaware, which has caused some confusion in sorting these families.

Since you query showed that your Steel family married into the Alexander family and the Steel's were from New Castle, Delaware, I decided to contact you to see if our families are connected. Any help would be appreciated.

I made a copy of your data and compaired it to my known Steel(e) family. Sorry, I could not make a connection to my Steele or Alexander families. Both of our lines lived in New Castle County, Delaware. Your line appears to be from Wilmington and the Mill Creek Hundred area in the eastern part of the county. My line lived in the western part of the county in White Clay Creek Hundred. Several of my line were members of the Presbyterian congregation of the Head of Christiana Church. My John Steel helped organize this church and later was an elder.

I did find a connection in your Notes for William Rankin in 4.Margaret Steel. Under Genforum #2114 Rankin: "Another family who owned land adjoining this John Rankin was James Steel, yeoman, and his wife, Mary." Their son James Steel Jr. was also mentioned. This James Steel, wife, Mary Alexander and son James Jr. are in my line. James's father was the above mentioned John Steel. I feel certain that our families were acquainted but so far I cannot find a family connection.
