Biography

Mary was born on the 13th of March 1808, and baptised on the 27th of March, in Sproxton, Leicestershire. Her parents were Elizabeth Steel and Geo. (George?) Bursnal, and her surname was listed in the baptism record as 'Steel or Bursnal'.

On 7 Oct 1827, Mary Steel married George Hotchin in Redmile, Leicestershire. George may already have been a widdower, as his name was followed by "w." on the marriage record.

Daughter Sarah Anne Hotchin was baptised on the 9th of July 1828, in Redmile. Daughter Joanna Hotchin was born in 1832, in Redmile, and baptised on the 5th of August 1832.

Another user's tree on ancestry.com shows a further son, George Hotchin, as son of Mary and George. However I haven't found a source supporting this, and it's possibly confusion with Mary's spouse, or possibly Joanna Hotchin's son (see below). Another ancestry.com tree has a death date of 1836 for Mary's husband George. I haven't found a source for this but the timing would fit.

Mary married James Musson (marked as widower) on the 2nd of September 1839 in Redmile.[1] They were both listed as 'of full age', with Mary's father named as George Bursnall, and James' as Thomas Musson, both labourers. First witness was William Green, the second is smudged but could be something like 'Jessay Lyamm'?

On the 1841 census Mary and James Musson (an agricultural labourer) lived in Redmile, with Mary's existing daughter Joanna Hotchin. By1851, they had been joined by new daughters Clementina and Lois Maria Musson.

Mary's daughter Clementina died in 1854, aged 8.

On the 1861 census, Joanna still lived with Mary and James Musson, in Redmile. Also living in the house were Lois Musson (11), Thomas Hotchin (9), and Robert Hotchin (5). Both Thomas and Robert were listed as 'daugter's son', imlpying they were children of Joanna.

Mary died in late 1867, registered in Grantham District. The rest of the Musson household was still based in Redmile on the 1871 census, with James listed as widdower.
