Biography

Ireland Native
Agnes (Steele) McClure was born in Ireland.

Agnes Elizabeth Steele was born around 1690 (reports vary from 1685 to 1694) in Raphoe, Donegal, Ireland. Her parents were:[1]

Father: Nathaniel STEELE b: 1660 in Raphoe, Donegal, Ireland
Mother: Rosanna MADON b: 1664 in Raphoe, Donegal, Ireland

I have questioned whether there was proof that Agnes was a Steele, as the sources I had only listed her as Agnes.[2][3] While searching through Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia, I found an entry that is likely her father's as it references her husband Halbert and her son Moses. This serves as proof as to her parentage and maiden name, though the date of the will leaves some question. If Nathaniel Steel was born in 1660, he lived an extraordinarily long life to have a will executed in 1795. Perhaps this was a recording of a will that should have long since been proven? Page 220.— 13th October, 1795. Nathaniel Steele's will— To wife, Rosannah ; to son, Nathaniel, all lands in Augusta County ; to grandson, Moses McClure, son of David; to grandson, Moses McClure, son of Halberd; to grandson, Nathaniel Blackburn; to daughter, Martha Cooper, and her daughter, Elizabeth Cooper ; to daughter, Rosannah ; to grandson, Nathaniel McClure. son of Samuel. Executors, wife Rosannah, son Nathaniel, and son-in-law Robert Cooper. Teste: John and Samuel Steele, Jno. Fulton. Proved, 21st June, 1796, by Fulton and Samuel Steel. Executors qualified except Rosannah, and leave reserved for her.[4]

Her paternal grandparents were from Scotland:[5]

Grandfather: John David STEELE b: 1630 in Scotland
Grandmother: Agnes Elizabeth McTAVISH b: 1660 in Raphoe Parish, County Donegal, Ireland (Scottish parents)

In about 1707, when she was 17 years old, Agnes Steele married Halbert Samuel McClure, b: 1684 in Raphoe, Donegal, Ireland. He too was of Scottish descent, from the Isle of Skye off Western Scotland. All were no doubt of the Scots Reformed or Presbyterian faith. The McClure family lived in County Donegal, Ireland for many years and had their children there. Reports vary but it's likely they had the following children, all in Donegal, Ireland: [6]

  1. Samuel McClure b: 1709 in Raphoe, Donegal, Ulster, Ireland
  2. Moses McClure b. 1710
  3. Nathaniel McClure b. 1712
  4. Andrew McClure b. 1713
  5. Alexander McClure b. 1717
  6. Hannah McClure b. 1719
  7. John McClure b. 1725
  8. Eleanor McClure b: 1730 in Raphoe, Donegal, Ireland
  9. Jean Esther McClure b: 1733 in Raphoe, Donegal, Ireland

In 1740 the entire family, including Agnes' parents and Halbert's younger brother, James McClure, b: 1690, emigrated from Donegal, Ulster, Ireland, to America. This coincides with an evangelist movement known as the "New Light Presbyterian Church," led by Rev. John Blair, from Ulster, Ireland. It's likely the Steeles and McClures followed this movement. They landed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but quickly moved down the Appalachian Trail to Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia. Apparently James McClure stayed near Staunton as he is buried at nearby Fishersville, Virginia, but Halbert and Agnes McClure's family moved another 35 miles southwest to Timber Ridge, in what is now Rockbridge County, Virginia.[7]

In 1746, Rev. John Blair founded the Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church, the 2nd oldest worship center in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. When Halbert Samuel McClure died on May 15, 1754, he was buried in its cemetery.[8] Agnes (Steele) McClure survived his passing. Her exact death date is not known but the best-researched family genealogy states she died in September 1768 in Augusta County, Virginia (no doubt at Timber Ridge). Her burial site is not known but relatives have established a Memorial for her associated with that of her husband.[9]

According to this blog: McClures from... on Climbingmyfamilytree blogspot, Halbert McClure and Agnes (Steele) McClure had 6 children:

  1. Samuel McClure (b. 1709)
  2. Moses McClure (b. 1710)
  3. Nathaniel McClure (b. 1712)
  4. Alexander McClure (b. 1717)
  5. Hannah McClure (b. 1719)
  6. John McClure (b. 1725)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Agnes by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Agnes:

Steele-4592 and Steele-1801 are not ready to be merged because: Probably same person, but need to resolve husband and children discrepancies. Also different death date.

I believe they are the same person, with both McClure men being in her life. The facts are that we are looking at a Scotch-Irish settlement, Halbert and brother James came over, Halbert dies leaving a will, and then James dies leaving a will, both mention Agnes and sons with the same names mentioned: John, Samuel and Alexander, with John listed as having the same spouse here on wikitree. I think due to the clanship connections, it's possible that she became the wife of James, and James, being the uncle of her children, took on a father role. The death dates and birth dates seem to be approximations. We have similar birthdates, surrounding the find a grave 1690 birthdate. We know she is of Rockbridge, Virginia and that she survived her first husband's passing. James could have been her second husband.

Agnes was married to Halbert, who died in 1754, Agnes died 2 years later. I don't believe that she married James in that time, nor married at the earlier date of 1717 as she was married to Halbert then. I do believe that James was also married to an Agnes, but not the same. There are notes that these two Agnes' are not the same.

Steele-4592 and Steele-1801 appear to represent the same person because: Agnes Elizabeth McTaverish Steele was called so during a time when the maiden name was sometimes attached to the child's name as a sign of respect toward their clan kinships. One Agnes Elizabeth Steele has mother listed as McTaverish, the one without parents has the tell tale maiden name in her own name. I think this is the same person, who married one, possibly two McClure men of this extensive clan.

McTavish-102 and Steele-1801 do not represent the same person because: McTavish-102 can not be married to McClure. Dates are way off. This may be a different Agnes. Please remove spouse.

McTavish-102 and Steele-1801 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, husband, and places of birth and death. The 1600-1656 dates are way off; the ones almost a century later on Steele-1801 are correct or close to it, and are compatible with the dates of her husband and children. Augusta County, the place of death, was not created or settled during the 1600s.

FYI, I did contact the owner of the Kellen information, asking about a source. I got a response.:

"Hi Julie, thanks for your note. The Campbell and McClure/Steele lines are on my to do list. I’m presently going through my 1200 person tree reconfirming and verifying data. Because it is the easiest I am starting with data beginning with the year 1800, and put everything before 1800 on the back burner. My pre 1800 data has not been confirmed and was just picked up in the past as I stumbled upon it. So, unfortunately, there is nothing more I can add at this time to help you with. I will keep your email and when I get to the pre 1800 will share anything found. "

I will add my sec. sources later (when I can get page correct page numbers), but again, I only have "Agnes".

Does anyone have a source for "Steele" or her parents? The sources used are other GEDCOM/internet trees that don't have any other sources either.

Find A Grave often can give at least some original source information, but in this case, there is no grave marker and no source for the information in the memorial.

I have the "Following the McClures - Donegal to Botetourt" used as a source for her marriage to Halbert Samuel McClure and their children. It says only "Agnes".

The source given for Agnes's parents (Timber Ridge) doesn't mention anyone by the name McClure nor Steele.

I haven't seen any legitimate source with "Steele" or what her parentage is. I have seen "Steele", "McTavish", "Walker" and a few other variants on the net. I would love to see even a secondary source
