Note: If Emma was born in 1821 and married in 1830, then she was married at age 9? The Census information is possibly 10 years "off." However, the book, Men of West Virginia, states she was 82 in 1903, again putting her birth date at c. 1821. Possibly the marriage record is incorrect, since the first surviving child was born c. 1843. They may have been married in 1840. This would fit with the children's birth dates.

Emma married on April 10, 1830 (1840?) at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia to George Hatley Carter.[2]

Census Information
George H. Carter was living at Prince William County, Virginia in 1850 with his wife, Emma, "age 29," Landon age 7, Mary L. age 4, Emma age 2, and Sarah C. age 1 (did she survive?).[3] His occupation is listed as farmer with real estate valued at $1,600.[3] Note: Fairfax County is adjacent to Prince William County.
Death and Legacy
Emma was living, and described as one of the oldest living citizens of Wheeling, at age 82 in 1903.[1]
