English actor, producer, and film director. Best remembered for playing Ashley Wilkes in "Gone With the Wind" (1939).
He was killed in 1943, while returning to England from vacation in Portugal, when his plane was shot down by Germans. Apparently, he was not a specific target. Any plane that was in that specific area was shot at.
The Peerage has his father as Frank Stainer.
He portrayed Reginald J Mitchell, designer of the Spitfire aeroplane, in the 1942 film "The First of the Few". [1]
