Dorothy Stephens, wife of Thomas Yate, Esq. of Lyford, Berkshire, England, was born at Burderop, Wiltshire in circa 1585 and died in February 1642/3. She also was the daughter of Nicholas Stephens, Esq., of Burderop, Wiltshire and Frances Brydges.

There were two other women in this time period named Dorothy Stevens. The first of the other Dorothy's was christened in Berkshire, England on 16 Dec. 1582 and was the daughter of William Stevens of Berkshire, England. The second of the other Dorothy Stevens was born in the mid-late 1570s and died in 1650, and was married to Robert Parker, the Minister (c. 1564 -1614).

There is only one Dorothy Stephens who was the daughter of Nicholas Stephens, Esq., of Burderop, Wiltshire, and Frances Brydges. This Dorothy was also married just once to Thomas Yate, Esq., of Lyford, Berkshire. She was born in the mid-late 1580s and died in Feb. 1642/3.

This information is well-sourced through the UK National Archives collection of the Title Deeds and associated papers of the Burderop estate of Nicholas Stephens, Esq. of Burderop, Wiltshire, England (died 1611).

I received the following by private message:

Not all wills in this time period included every biological child. Additionally, two contemporary visitations of the time period (early 17th century) from Berkshire and Wiltshire state that Dorothy Stephens, wife of Thomas Yate, Esq., was the daughter of Nicholas Stephens, Esq., of Burderop, Wiltshire. There is also another contemporaneous record found in the National Archives, E 133/10/1474: "The attendance at church of Thomas Yate of Lyford, Berks"; stating that Dorothy was the daughter of Nicholas Stephens, Esq. of Wiltshire, England.

The Dorothy Stephens who married Thomas Yate, Esq., of Lyford, Berkshire, England was the daughter of Nicholas Stephens, Esq., of Burderop, Wiltshire, England and his first wife, Frances Brydges, whom Nicholas married in 1574. Frances (Brydges) Stephens died sometime around 1606, as Nicholas married his second wife, Eleanor Maskelyne of Purton Wiltshire, England in February 1607/8. This is confirmed by the Burderop Estate Deeds and Titles at the UK National Archives.

Furthermore, the Dorothy Stevens who was christened on 16 Dec. 1582 in Berkshire, England and the daughter of William Stevens of Berkshire, England was a completely separate and different woman from the other two Dorothy Stevens (or Stephens) of this time period [the Dorothy Stephens who married Thomas Yate, Esq of Lyford, Berkshire, England and the Dorothy Stevens who married Robert Parker (c.1564–1614) (minister)]. This is confirmed by the naming of Thomas Yate, Esq., of Lyford, Berkshire in the 2 Feb. 1609/10 will of Nicholas Stephens, Esq., and in the Yate pedigree found in the 1623 Visitation of Berkshire.

It is very clear based on primary evidence, that Nicholas Stephens, Esq., of Bouldthorpe, Wiltshire and Frances Brydges were the parents of Dorothy Stephens, wife of Thomas Yate, Esq., and should not be represented as unconfirmed in Wikitree.

I am disconnecting Robert Parker as her husband, since this is the profile for the wife of Thomas Yate and whoever the wife of Robert Parker was, there is no reason to believe that she was the same woman who married Thomas Yate.

Her relationship as daughter of Nicholas is being questioned. Please see this g2g discussion. Thanks.

Stephens-2567 and Stephens-2517 appear to represent the same person because: death is well documented on -2517, birth is a guess

Stevens-1692 and Stephens-2517 appear to represent the same person because: 5. Thomas Yate, son of Francis and Jane, was born cir. 1570, and died leaving a will dated 7 Aug 1654, proved 1660. He married Mary Tregian (an indigent relative of Queen Elizabeth I), and 2nd, Dorothy Stephens, daughter of Nicholas Stephens of Bouldthorpe, Wiltshire. Dorothy was a descendant of John Yates of Lyford.
