"There is a mystery to William Washington " Billy" Stephens. He was listed as being born in the Texas yet there is a story that none of the living relatives knows. According to our family members his dad or granddad was living out east and due to either his illness or his family or even the lost of his family, he came out West with a doctor, who we think was Dr Nathan Gann. told by one family and another story was that he came west due to an illness, either his or his family with this doctor, stopped in LA to rest up for the night and was approched by a black man who had ran off from his owner. He hadn't either and they fed him. Then the posse caught with the men and the Stephens boy thd doctor were going to be hung. The Stephens, who I believe to be Billy's dad becasuse of his youth but the men hung the other two men for helping a slave. and if you think it is a strange story to you it is even stranger to us as all the old timers who could tell the true story was gone when I started researching. One thing is for sure the Stephens men had the worse luck. William married an Anderson and had only 3 children, one married an Allred, A Thigpen [1]
