Private Eliphalet Stephens served with 3rd New York Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.
ELIPHALET STEPHENS was born around 1732 in Guilford, Connecticut. He was the son of Ebenezer Stephens and Abigail Lord. He married Elsie “Elsa” Holloway (1733-1820), daughter of Joseph Holloway and Hannah Soule, in 1751 in Connecticut. They had 12 children: Sarah; John; Zyphron; Ebenezer; Eliphalet Jr.; Noah; Abigail (10/10/1765-7/26/1846); Holloway; Theodore; Asa; Angeline; and William. He was a blacksmith by trade. He served in the French and Indian War while living in Connecticut, serving under Capt. Hull’s Company in 1757. The records show the militia was raised to either relieve or in response to the siege of Fort William Henry in upstate New York. He is said to have been a member of the Susquehanna Company, which purchased land in present day Luzerne County, Pennsylvania from Indians. He, with 200 others, established the Mill Creek Colony in 1762 and then came back to Connecticut for the winter before returning the following spring. In October 1673 the local Indians attacked the colony and killing 30 settlers. Eliphalet and his family fled and began living in Dutchess County, New York. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War he was living in Minisinck, Orange Co., New York. He served in the Revolutionary War in 1775 in the Continental Line, 3rd Regiment, under Colonel Clinton, in Dutchess County, New York. Records described him as being five feet, seven inches tall, light hair, and fair complexion. After the war he re-settled in the Wyoming Valley in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania near the Lackawanna River. His return may be related to the land conflicts between Connecticut and Pennsylvania called the Pennamite Wars, which resulted in Pennsylvania’s control of northern part of the state (granted by the Continental Congress). In 1795 he purchased land from James Flinn and also took a half interest in a Saw Mill. He was listed in the Luzerne County 1798 tax list, living in Nicholson. He continued to live there until his death in 1814 in Nicholson, Pennsylvania. Elsie is said to have died in 1820.
