In "Stevens of Newbury and Andover, Mass." [NEHGR LXXXV], G. Andrews Moriarty wrote that this John Stevens was . . .

"probably a son either of the John Stevens of Caversham . . . presumably . . . buried there 11 Jan. 1617/18 . . . "

  • or*

"of the William Stevens of the same parish . . . whose wife, Cecily, was buried there 20 Feb 1601/2 . . . "

Moriarty goes on to say that this John "was born perhaps about 1575, and was probably the John Stevens who was buried at Caversham 21 Sept. 1627."

As the biography correctly says, Caversham was in Oxfordshire. It remained a part of Oxfordshire until 1911 when it was added to the County Borough of Reading, and thus to Berkshire.

The children Jane and Thomas listed above probably are not of this family.

Stephens-3940 and Stevens-340 appear to represent the same person because: dups with same dates and same locations ... just alternate surname spellings. Please merge
