He died in the Civil war. One source says at Tupello, Mississippi, but another says on Ship Island in federal prison camp. No source provided for this statement. FindAGrave Memorial 65574866 for T. Stephens: died 6 Dec 1864 "3rd Louisiana Cavalry, died of Chronic Diarrhea."

Stephens-5568 and Stephens-5278 appear to represent the same person because: There are some details that need to be harmonized, but they do indeed seem to be the same person. He died on Ship Island, Mississippi as a Civil War prisoner from woulds he received in battle.
