Research Notes
Stetson Kindred Genealogical Index: 1-1-2-5-5-2-7
Eight children of Jeremiah Stetson[31] (mother not named) were baptized in Weymouth on 19 December 1824, identified (alphabetically) as Anson, Brainerd, David, Eliza, Hiram, Harriet Newell, Julia Ann, and Lucinda.
Six of these names correspond to the names of recorded births of children of Jeremiah and Hannah (White) Stetson, but two children whose births were recorded at Weymouth who were then living (Emeline/Eveline and Louisa) are not on the baptism list and two names on the baptism list (David and Eliza) do not correspond to recorded children. Eveline had married the previous year, which likely explains her absence from the delayed baptism of her siblings.
Some researchers have mistakenly interpreted the baptism records for David and Eliza as birth records and have called them twins, but that is inconsistent with the indication of a group baptism on that date. (Also, since Jeremiah and Hannah had a son David born in 1817 who apparently did not die young, and the birth of a child on 14 December 1823 would make this an unusually close spacing of births, particularly for an older mother like Hannah, it is not plausible that they had twins on 19 December 1824 and gave one of them the name of a brother.) These two names probably are due to a mistake in the baptism record. "Eliza" is likely to be the same child as Louisa, and "David" may have been entered due to confusion about whether the child was named David or Brainerd. - Ellen Smith; December 2023.
