Biography

1776 Project
Sergeant Gideon Stetson Sr. served with 1st Massachusetts Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Gideon Stetson was first child of John and Rachael (Paine) Stetson born in Braintree (section of town that later became Randolph), Massachusetts in 1762. [1]

Married twice: Married First: Nancy Thayer, his cousin, in 1783 (or 3 Apr 1784). [2]

They had 10 Children.

Married Second: Tirzah (Warner) Dickinson on December 24, 1820, after the death of Nancy.

He was a prominent citizen of Amherst being Selectman and assessor for many years.[1]

He served in the American Revolutionary War

  • 1881, Private, Capt John Mills co., Col Joseph Vos's 1st Regt, enlisted for 3 years.
  • Aug 1881 - reported at Peekskill with Col Putnam
  • Jan 1782 - Promoted to Corporal, then with Capt Mill's co., Col Vose's (1st Regt). [3]
  • as sergeant in Capt Jeremiah Renick's company, Col Joseph Vose's first Massachusetts regiment, 1781-83. In 1819 he was placed on the Revolutionary War pension roll of Hampshire County, Massachusetts.[4]

Also served as Sergeant under Colonel Putnam who fortified West Point. Served 3 Years. Enlisted from Abington.[1]

Gideon Stetson died in Amherst, Massachusetts, on 14 October 1835. He is buried in West Cemetery in Amherst. [5] His gravestone gives his age as 74 years. [6]
