Maria Stetson was a daughter of Gideon Stetson Jr. and Clarissa (Henry) Stetson, born 15 October 1827 in Shutesbury, Franklin County, Massachusetts. [1]
Maria A. Stetson, 22-year-old daughter of Gideon and Clarisa Stetson married Edwin C. Kellogg in Shutesbury, Massachusetts, on 27 June 1849. Her new husband was recorded as age 32, a son of Waitstil and Submit Kellogg, born at Amherst, Massachusetts, and a "manufacturer of lumber" by occupation. Both Edwin and Maria were residents of Shutesbury, and it was the first marriage for both.[2]
The 1850 U.S. Census recorded Edwin C. Kellogg, age 32, a native of Vermont, in Shutesbury, with Mariah Kellogg, age 22, John H. Stetson (Mariah's brother), age 20, Jeanette Stetson (Mariah's sister), 18, and George E. Kellogg, 3 months old. Edwin Kellogg was a stavemaker by occupation; John Stetson was a sawyer. Edwin reported $200 in real property.[3]
In 1855 the Massachusetts state census again recorded the family in Shutesbury. Edwin C. Kellogg was age 38 and Maria A Kellogg was age 28. Children in the household were George E Kellogg, age 5, Clara A. Kellogg, 3, and Olive Kellogg, age not legible. A child named Atwell Noble, age 11, also lived in the household. Edwin was a lumberman by occupation and was born in New Haven, Vermont; the others were born in Massachusetts.[4]
By 1860, the family had removed to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where the U.S. Census recorded Edwin C. Kellogg, age 40, a lumberman, with Maria Kellogg, age 32, and children George Kellogg, 10, Clara Kellogg, 8, and Olive Kellogg, 5.[5]
In 1880 the U.S. Census recorded her as "Maryer" Kellogg, age 52, in the 4th ward of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, with husband E. C. Kellogg, age 63, a lumberman, and daughters Clara, age 26, and Nannie, age 13.[6]
Her husband died in 1890, in Colorado County, Texas. In 1903, Hopkins reported that Maria was living in Kansas City, Missouri.[7]
She died on 21 April 1909 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Reported cause of death was Arteriosclerosis. Burial was in North Amherst, Massachusetts, on 26 April 1909.[8]
Edwin C Kellogg and his wife Maria A Stetson are memorialized on a stone in Stetson Cemetery (a.k.a. Luther Henry Tomb Yard) in Shutesbury. Maria is shown with life data of birth on October 15, 1827, in Shutesbury and death on April 21, 1909, in Oshkosh.[9] The stone shows Edwin's life data of birth on 20 January 1817 in New Haven, Vermont, and death on 19 July 1890 in Colorado, Texas.[10]
