Biography

Jeremiah Stetson was born in September 1776, at Braintree, Massachusetts, the second child and son of Rufus Stetson and Comfort Paine (Thayer) Stetson.[1]

He married Hannah White at Randolph on 1 December 1803. [2][3][4] The couple had entered their intentions of marriage at Abington, Massachusetts, on 23 October 1803. The record of intentions identifies Hannah as "of Randolph"; the wording implies that Jeremiah was residing at Abington at the time.[5][6]

Jeremiah and Hannah removed to Weymouth not long after their marriage (in 1804). [4] All ten of their children were born at Weymouth:[7]

  1. Mary Stetson, born 6 October 1804; died 18 October 1804
  2. Emeline Stetson, (or Eveline [4]) born 25 November 1805 [8] identified as Eveline or Evelina by Sprague and Stetson.[7][4]
  3. Hiram W. Stetson, born 14 November 1807;[8] died 23 October 1840 in Louisiana [4]
  4. Lucinda (Stetson) Burrell/Barrill, Bowker, born 17 January 1811;[8] married (1) William H. Barrill/Burrell, February 26 1833; married (2) William Bowker of Randolph 16 January 1844 [4]
  5. Louisa (Stetson) Bradley, born 8 July 1813;[8] married Asa Bradley, 30 October 1836 [4]
  6. Harriet Newell (Stetson) Hayden, born 2 March 1815;[8] m. Capt Nathaniel Hayden, 3 November 1836 (Intentions October 15); died 5 June 1840 [4]
  7. Brainard David Stetson, born 1 February 1817;[8] apparently later known as David Brainard Stetson [4]; m. (1), Abigail Spear, 25 Apr 1841; m. (2) Hannah B.D. (Clark) Fitz, 2 Jul 1874 at Quincy, Massachusetts [9];
  8. Anderson Stetson, born 18 January 1821;[8] later recorded as Anson[8][4]
  9. Julia Ann (Stetson) Gray born 14 December 1823;[8] married John Gray of Quincy, Massachusetts, 16 April 1843 [4]
  10. Henry Martin Martyn Stetson, born 18 December 1825;[8]; m. (1) Eliza J. Martin, 27 Nov 1856 at Smithfield, Rhode Island [10]; m.(2) Sawbretto Fuller [11]; died 16 June 1875, Attleboro, Massachusetts, no children.[4]

Hannah Stetson dies in December 1853 at Weymouth [12]

In 1855, the Massachusetts state census recorded Jeremiah Stetson, age 78, living in Boston as a solo householder. He was a shoemaker by occupation.[13]

Erroneous Children

Some online genealogies or other "sources" give Jeremiah and Hannah two additional children, twins named David and Eliza supposedly born on 19 December 1824. This is an error, apparently due to misinterpretation of records of the [delayed] baptisms (not births) on that date of eight children of Jeremiah Stetson (mother not named). The children baptized in Weymouth that day were identified (in alphabetical order) as Anson, Brainerd, David, Eliza, Hiram, Harriet Newell, Julia Ann, and Lucinda.[8] Six of these names correspond to the names of recorded births of children of Jeremiah and Hannah, but two recorded children who were then living (Emeline/Eveline and Louisa) are not on the baptism list and two names on the baptism list (David and Eliza) do not clearly correspond to recorded births. "Eliza" is likely to be the same child as Louisa, and "David" may have been entered due to confusion about whether the baptized child was named David or Brainerd. Emeline/Eveline had married the previous year, which explains her absence from the delayed baptism of her siblings.

The Descendants of Cornet Robert Stetson has him the son of Rufus and Comfort (Thayer) Stetson

Stetson Kindred index: 1-1-2-5-5-2

I linked them up this morning, so his connection a solid back to The Cornet

Stetson-402 and Stetson-117 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth, spouse as in Sprague, Genealogies, Families of Braintree (will add citation)

There is a Jeremiah Stetson (1-4-9-5-3-2) listed in The Descendants but he was born in 1788 and the rest of the family names don't match up.

I can't find another Jeremiah that fits the dates or family.
