Biography

Nehemiah Stevens was born. 25 Aug 1784 in Hopewell, New Brunswick, the son of Nehemiah Stevens and Rebecca Anderson of Horton NS, the first of their children to be born in NB[1] [2]

On October 7, 1808, he married Abigail Copp. She may have been the daughter of Capt David Copp and Mary Pyke, who also moved from Horton to Hopewell, however other sources give this Abigail Copp different spouse. [1] [2].

Parish of Hopewell, Westmorland County, Yeoman. Intestate. Administration granted 9 September 1819 to the widow Abigail STEVENS, Thomas STEVENS and Aaron STEVENS, all of Hopewell. Fellow bondsmen William CRANE Esq. and Jethro CHASE of Sackville. On 14 August 1832 Abigail STEVENS, Edward STEVENS, Rebecca STEVENS and Nehemiah STEVENS, as widow and heirs of Nehemiah STEVENS Junior, appointed James STEWART Esq. their proctor to object to the passing of accounts by Thomas STEVENS and Aaron STEVENS acting as administrators of the estate. A dispute over administration of the estate by Edward STEVENS was instigated in 1855 and is beyond the scope of this work. Testimony in the case, however, revealed that the deceased owned the schooner "Nancy," of about 70 tons burthen, described as "oldish and 2d hand," sold at auction for £227 to Martin COLE. COLE made mention of other goods from a store sold at the same time. Samuel WEST testified that the hull of a vessel at that time was worth £6 to £6 10s. per ton "and the rigging would, as I heard be worth nearly as much." Apparently another vessel was involved, mentioned by a Mr. GOFF as being sold in St. John by Thomas STEVENS and by Martin COLE as " Knew the vessel spoken of by Mr. GOFF was building at Rosea, but never saw her. She would be worth in those times about £800."
