Biography

Jane Stevens was born in the Bristol area of Somerset England to Frederick and Sarah Stevens December 1831. She was baptized January 3rd 1832 at the Parish of East Brent in Somerset England. In 1834 Jane got a new baby brother George Stevens and she was proud of him I am sure. About 1838 Jane’s father Frederick passed away and by 1840 Jane’s Mother Sarah Brown Stevens met and married Thomas Tyley the 23rd of March in a beautiful wedding setting at Bristol, St Mary Redcliffe, Gloucestershire, England.

In June of 1841 A son William George Tyley was born to the couple. One year later in April of 1842 Thomas Tyley, his new bride Sarah, with her two children from the previous marriage, and infant William were boarding the ship Jane and Barbara to sail out of Bristol to New York. Sara Brown Stevens Tyley passed away during the voyage (duley noted on ships manifest)leaving Thomas Tyley with Sarahs two children Jane Stevens, George Stevens, and their own infant son William. Thomas Tyley found his way to Nankin Township, Wayne County, Michigan USA.

Jane Stevens shows up in the 1850 census at a boarding house most likely working as a housekeeper. She was 17 years old. She may have met her future husband here as she next shows up in the 1860 census married to Charles Albert Howard and is 27 years old and Charles Ablert is 31. 1860 Federal censes for Michigan, Wayne, Nankin page 62. In that census Albert A. (New York) is with his new bride Jane Stevens (England). They were married April 1, 1860 and the census was taken on the 20th of June 1860. Of note on the same page Thomas Tyley, Margaret Tyley, and William Tyley aged 19 is listed. Jane Howards Mother was Sarah Stevens. Thomas Tyley was Jane’s Step Father. Sarah Stevens Married Thomas Tyley and they had a son William Tyley. William was Jane’s half brother. Charles and Jane Howard had a son Charles W. Howard in 1861 and another son Albert C. in 1863. Charles A. Howard enlisted for the Civil war in 1864 with the Michigan 4th calvary and was in Nashville, Tennessee in the spring of 1865 when he died of disease. This left Jane with two infant sons. Per the Military survivor benefits document Thomas Tyley shows up as Guardian of Jane Howard, Charles W. and Albert C. Jane Howard passed in 1867. The family legend was the boys were raised by a kindly neighbor Mr. Thomas Tyley, but in reality I discovered in this process that Mr Tyley was their Step Grandfather. And Thomas Tyley was all they had in this world. The boys always thought well of Thomas. Charles William was my Great Grand Father and Charles Albert who died in the Civil War was my Great Great Grandfather. I would like to find and confirm the parents of Charles Albert Howard 1829-1865. I visited his grave in the National Cemetery in Nashville in 2012, and was probably the first in my family to ever find and visit the grave site
