Probate
Nathan Stevens wrote his will 13 May 1740. Beloved wife Elizabeth is to receive one-third of the produce of his tillage lands, two cows to be at her disposal, plus other provisions needed for her care and support. His grandchildren, who are the children of his daughter Elizabeth who is deceased who was the wife of Timothy Pearl, receive six pounds to be divided among them. Daughter Hannah the wife of Samuel Eams receives five pounds by the end of three years after his decease. Daughter Pheby the wife of Nicholas Steel receives ten pounds. There is an interesting bequest to granddaughter “Eunos Ginnins” who is the oldest daughter of his daughter Pheby who is to receive ten pounds when she reaches the age of 21.[5] Daughter Lydia Stevens receives 60 pounds, and if she remains single will receive the use of the portion of the house that her mother occupies after mother’s decease, as well as some other considerations. Son Nathan, who is named executor, receives all the lands and the remainder of the estate not otherwise distributed. On 27 September 1746, Elizabeth Abbott Stevens signed a quit claim releasing her dower portion in exchange for a settlement of a payment to her of 40 pounds per year. This allowed grandson Nathan Stevens to take full control of the real property. Elizabeth’s son Nathan died just a few months after his father. In 1746, grandson Nathan Stevens was 22 years old and ready to assume his adult responsibilities.[6]
