Joseph was born in Andover but settled in Methuen as a young man. Joseph’s father died when Joseph was just two years old. Joseph received property in Methuen as part of a land division.

On 27 May 1729 (recorded 22 May 1730), there was division among the heirs to a property in Methuen which was formerly granted to Samuel Green of Cambridge. Joseph Stevens of Andover was represented by his guardian Joseph Parker in the transaction. Joseph’s three brothers Joshua, Benjamin, and Samuel were also parties in the transaction which also included members of the Gutterson, Barker, and Swan families. On 5 November 1731, Joseph was of Methuen when he and his brothers Joshua and Samuel quitclaimed their interest in property of their beloved brother Benjamin, deceased, to Annis Stevens widow of Benjamin.[8]

On 1 May 1789 (recorded 21 March 1797), Joseph Stevens, yeoman of Methuen, in consideration of £100, conveyed to his son Noah Stevens, husbandman of Methuen, one-half of all the lands and buildings in Methuen and Salem, New Hampshire and one-half of a one-fourth part of the corn mill standing on the north side of Spicket Falls in Methuen. On 5 November 1789 (recorded 21 March 1797), Joshua Stevens, yeoman of Methuen, requitted to his brother Noah Stevens one-half of the property in Methuen and Salem, New Hampshire sold to Noah and Joshua on 1 May 1789 by honored father Joseph Stevens deceased. On 1 December 1789 (recorded 11 July 1793), Joshua sold a one-fourth part interest in the corn mill to Caleb Swan for £19.10.[9]
