Lucy Dorothy Stevens, second child and second daughter of Alfred Henry Stevens and Lucy Thomas, [1][2] was born on 19 November 1883[3] at Farnham, Surrey. [1][4] Her birth was registered at Farnham, Surrey, in the third quarter of 1883.
Lucy was baptised on 1 January 1884 at St Andrew's church, Farnham, Surrey. [2] The baptismal record notes her parents' address at the time as Castle Street, Farnham, and her father is noted as a hop planter.
At the 1891 census Lucy, aged 7, is with her family at 62 Castle Street, Farnham, Surrey. Details recorded - father Alfred H Stevens (40, hop planter and employer, born Farmham, Surrey), mother Lucy Stevens (33, born London, Middlesex), sister Ethel M Stevens (9, born Farnham), Lucy D Stevens (7, born Farnham, Surrey), and sister Gertrude O Stevens (5, born Farnham), together with her mother's sister Annie Thomas (single, 30, born London, Middlesex). There are also four resident servants on the census date.
In the 1901 census, recorded using her second name only name, Dorothy Stevens (17, born Farnham, Surrey) is found at a boarding house, called "Homestead", for a high school located at Weeke Within, by Winchester, Hampshire. Her sister Gertrude Stevens (15) is also a boarder alongside her. There are a total of 9 girls aged between 9 and 18 listed at this boarding house. In the meantime Dorothy's home continues at Castle Street, Farnham, (now listed as number 63 instead of 62) where her father is described as a retired farmer, and her mother is still present together with her older sister Ethel (19) and a new sister Jovce (8). Three servants are also retained.
At the 1911 census Dorothy is at the parental home, again listed as 62 Castle Street, Farnham. Details listed - father Alfred Henry Stevens (60, retired hop farmer), mother Lucy Stevens (53, born Tower Hamlets, London), Lucy Dorothy Stevens (27, single, born Farnham), sister Gertrude Stevens Osmond Stevens (25, single) and sister Joyce Mary Umfreville Stevens (18, born Farnham). Three servants are listed - cook, parlour maid and housemaid (Laura Marritt aged 32, Mabel Rowe aged 19 and Alice Jane Wells aged 19). This census usefully confirms that Dorothy 's parents have been married for 31 years, and there were four children of the marriage, all of whom are still living.
On 12 May 1914 Lucy Dorothy Stevens (30, spinster) married Edward Glossop Wells (35, bachelor, Clerk in Holy Orders) at St Andrew's church, Farnham, Surrey. Lucy's address at the time is still at Castle Street, Farnham, while that of the groom is at South Front, Southampton. The couple's respective fathers are confirmed as Alfred Henry Stevens (Gentleman) and Edward Wells (Clerk in Holy Orders). The marriage was registered at Farnham in the second quarter of 1914.[5][6] Extracts of a report on the wedding are - At the parish church, Farnham, on May 12th May, Miss Lucy Dorothy Stevens, daughter of Mr. A. H. Stevens, of Farnham, Surry, was married to the Rev. Edward Glossop Wells, son of the Rev. E. Wells, of Dean, Salisbury. Officiating were the Rev. E. Wells (father of the bridegroom), and the Rev. Neville Lovett. rector of St. Mary's, Southampton, and the bride was given away by her father. ...... Attending her were Miss Ursula Wells (sister of the bridegroom) and Miss Phyllis Hunt ...... The train bearers were Master Launcelot Stevens ...... and Miss Miriam Stevens. The bridegroom ...... was supported by his brother, The Rev. Alban Wells as best man. Later a reception was held at 62 Castle Street, Farnham, by the bride's parents, ...... [7]
First child Catherine Charlotte Wells was born in 1915, birth registered at Southampton in the second quarter of the year.[8]
During WW1 Lucy's husband served as a chaplain in the Royal Army Chaplain's Department. Their address at this time was Eastleigh Vicarge, Hampshire. Eastleigh is just 5 miles to the north of Southampton.
Second child and second daughter Dorothy M Wells was born in 1917, birth registered at Southampton in the second quarter of the year.[9]
Third child and first son Edward Martin Glossop Wells was born in 1919, birth registered at South Stoneham registration district, Hampshire, in the fourth quarter of the year.[10] Note: in 1927 South Stoneham became part of Eastleigh Registration District.
Fourth child and second son Stephen Glossop Wells was born in 1922, birth registered at South Stoneham registration district, Hampshire, in the third quarter of the year.[11]
The 1939 England and Wales Register lists Lucy and her husband at Overton Rectory, Overton, Hampshire. Their details - Lucy Dorothy Wells (born 19 November 1883) and Edward Glossop Wells (born 13 October 1878, Clerk in Holy Order). A number of domestic employees are also recorded.
Lucy's husband died on 19 March 1952, aged 73, their address at the time being 47 Waldens Park Road, Horsell, Woking, Surrey.
Passenger lists record that on 16 June 1952 Lucy Dorothy Wells (68) of 47 Waldens Park Road, Horsell, nr Woking, embarked, first class, at London, on the "Kanya", bound for Mombasa, Kenya. Her country of future permanent residence is described as Kenya/England.
Lucy Dorothy Wells of 14 Laleham Court, Cobham Road, Horsell, Woking, died 27 May 1984. (National Probate Calendar - 1984) Her death was registered in Surrey in May 1984, aged 100.
