John Stevens was born in 1856, the first son of Edwin A. Stevens to grow to maturity. He married Mary Marshall McGuire of Berryville, VA, on 25 Jun 1883. He was tormented through much of his life with a prominent goiter on the left side of his neck, reputedly offering $1mln to a doctor that could successfully rid him of it. He died in 1894 of complications from that removal, leaving a significant fortune to his young daughter.
Note that his portrait was executed in profile to hide the goiter.
