Richard was a son of Henry Stevens, born in Stonington, Connecticut. His recorded birthdate is January 25, 1679. [1][2] Given that a brother was born in December 1678, it is likely that Richard's birthdate was recorded in the old style (rather than using double-dating, which would have made it January 25, 1679/80), so the New Style date for Richard's birth would be January 25, 1680.
He was baptized in Stonington on February 18, 1693, together with two of his brothers.[3]
Richard Stephens married Sarah Harker on June 9, 1704. She was the daughter of John and Patience (Fowler) Harker of Boston. They were married in Boston by Rev. Samuel Willard of the Old South Church. Richard inherited one-half of the family homestead in Stonington. He lived on the homestead until June 1732.[4]
Children of Richard and Sarah (Harker) Stephens were:[4]
John, b. Mar. 21, 1705.
Sarah, b. May 4, 1708; m. May 28, 1730, Uriah Stevens (7), son of Thomas. [North Stonington Church Records.]
