Turnbull Family
By Audrey Turnbull
Jack Turnbull came with his parents, sister and brother from Doe Lake, Ontario to the St. Boswells District in 1919 to buy a farm. They located one mile north of the Emery School. Their son Edwin, wife and family run the farm now.
In 1943, Mr. and Mrs. H. Turnbull, Sr. moved to Haney, B.C.. Jack’s parents and a brother, Mervin, passed away in British Columbia.
Jack came to Vanguard in 1926 or 27 to work in a garage, for George Richie. Later on, he worked for Pete Keefner and then for George Hoffman.
I came from Winnipeg on June 10, 1928 to my brother Steve and his wife Clara ( the former C. Pease). My brother L.G. Stevens had the White Grocery, so I helped in the store for a while, then Clara and I got a job cooking on a cook-car for Mr. Tait. Clara was the cook and I was the cookee. We had 17 men to cook for and spent 42 days going from farm to farm with the threshing outfit.
On April 14, 1929, Jack and I were married in the Catholic Manse by Father Jerome. Our first home was in Charlie Nichols house where we rented some of the rooms.
In 1931, we had our first child-a son, Kenneth, who was born in the Vanguard hospital. Dr. McVicar was the doctor who delivered Ken. Ken is a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology in Calgary.
In 1934, we left Vanguard and moved to a small house that Jack’s folks had on their farm. The day we moved you could hardly see outside for the dust blowing. Jack and I left Ken with his grandmother and went to Ghost Pine Creek,Alberta-he to do combining and I to cook. We came back to the house on the farm in the fall.
On New Years Day, 1936, we moved to the hamlet of Glen Bain where Jack bought an old building to start a garage in the spring.
Our second son Jim, was born in Vanguard on June 11, 1936, delivered by Dr. White. Jim was the first baby for the hamlet of Glen Bain. Jim and his cousin, Allan Turnbull, were both killed in a car accident on the way to Medicine Hat. Jim left a wife, Myrna, and two sons, Brad and Cameron, who both live in Drayton Valley, Alberta. We had our third child, Brenda, born in Kincaid, June 17, 1940. Brenda was married to Const. Selwood and has one daughter, Candace, age 10. Brenda is divorced, lives in Langley and works at the bank of Commerce. We had our fourth child, Lynn, born in Kincaid July 26, 1943. Lynn was married to Const. Don Gamble. She is now separated and works in the mobile library in Regina. She has 3 children: Jim, Jacayln and Jill.
In 1943 Jack bought the trucking business from Jasper Loucks, trucking from Glen Bain, Esmey, Vanguard, Pambrun, Neville to Swift Current.
