Biography

Bill Stevens was born on September 29, 1871, in Detroit, Michigan, to William Stevens (age 51) and Ellen Petherick (age 34.)

He married Mary "Flare" Whitwood Flinn on February 7, 1911, in his hometown. They had two children, Anne and Bill, and four granddaughters.

He died on May 24, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 81, and was buried at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit, Michigan.

Obituary from the Detroit Free Press, Detroit, Michigan, 1953, May 25, Monday [1]

"William P. Stevens, who spent a lifetime developing Highland Park and other area industrial centers, died Sunday afternoon in Bon Secours Hospital after a long illness. He was 82. A member of an early-day Detroit family, Mr Stevens spent his entire life developing extensive holdings acquired by his father, Capt. Willaim H. Stevens...

"William P. Stevens was graduated from Yale University as a civil engineer in 1893 and joined his father in realestate development, including the Ford Motor Co. site in Highland Park.

"He served a term on the old Detroit Board of Estimates and for several years was a councilman at Grosse Pointe Farms.

"During WWI, Mr. Stevens worked with the War Department, acquiring property for military installations..."

DNA confidence of parents

Paternal relationship of William Stevens with his parents is confirmed by a match of his grandchild and a grandchild of his sibling, Annie Stevens. (Both are descendants of William Henry Stevens and Ellen Petherick.) The second cousins are GEDMatch A752864 and GEDmatch A860147.

In addition, a match of a granddaughter of William Petherick Stevens, and a great-granddaughter of his sister, Annie Stevens, (who married Fremont Woodruff,) was determined on Ancestry.com. (Source private.)

DNA Note: William P Stevens only had one child with descendants. (His son, William F. Stevens did not have children.) Therefore, his grandchildren do not have first cousins with whom to compare DNA, and the closest living relations to his grandchildren [in 2016] are second and third cousins on the Stevens side.

On the Petherick side, the mother of William P Stevens, was an only child; there are no third cousins on the Petherick side, and the closest living relations would be 4th cousins, and decendants of Ellens' paternal grandparents, namely John Petherick and Loveday Michell, or maternal grandparents, namely John Hitchens and Mary Chapman.
