William Stevens was a South Carolina colonist.

William Smith Stevens was born about 1758. At the time of his birth, his father owned land in Dorchester, St. George Parish, Province of South Carolina.

During the Revolutionary war, William Smith Stevens entered into service in the Continental Hospital connected with the state of South Carolina and received a Commission as Junior Surgeon. His Revolutionary War file shows that at the Surrender of Charles Town he became prisoner of War which continued for near 14 months.[1] The pay stubs recorded: Issued 1st November 1785, to Mr. Wm. Smith Stevens for 700 pounds stg for 5 year's full pay in lieu of half pay for Life (agreeable to a Resolve of both Houses,) Acct. passed by the Auditor General.[2]

Wm. Smith Stevens married Hannah Ash on the 18th of July 1805 in Charleston, South Carolina at the Independent Congregational Circular Church.[3] A marriage settlement was entered into between William Smith Stevens of Charleston, Physician, and Hannah Ashe of the same place, Widow and relict of Samuel Ashe late of Charleston Gentlemen deceased, and Samuel Barksdale Jones also of Charleston Gentleman Trustee for the Hannah Ashe and guardian of Samuel Ashe and Andrew Deveaux Ashe, the two children of Samuel Ash.[4]

The 1810 Census for Charleston, South Carolina enumerated the household of Wm. S. Stevens with:

one male age 10 to 16, one male age 16 to 26, one male over age 45,
one female under age 10, three females age 10 to 16, one female age 16 to 26, and one female over age 45[5]
