Biography

Mary (Stewart) Baker is a member of the Stewart Name Study Project.

Dr. Reynolds attending physician; "cause of death - broncho pneumonia" Obituary written by Albert G. Caris, her son in law: β€œOn Nov. 22, 1827, in Georgetown, Madison Co. N.Y., there came to earth the spirit of Mary L. Stewart, which was permitted for more than four score years to wear its fleshy garment. Having spent the years of her childhood and young womanhood amid the scenes of her birth, at the age of twenty-two, she became the bride of Orange W.Baker, a resident of Lebanon, N.Y. During their period of residence at the latter place, two children, Carlton S. and Lillian Florence were born. The daughter died Feb 16, 1890, while the earthly companionship of the son was spared the mother until June 12, 1910. In 1867, the family removed from Lebanon, N.Y.; to a farm near Grant Park, Ill. Two years after the death of the husband, at this place in 1894, a second removal was made when in 1896, residence was taken up in Story City, Iowa. Three years later, she traveled eastward and settled at Raymond, Union County, Ohio, where she dwelt until six weeks before her death, when she removed to Defiance, Ohio, to make her home with her only grandchild, Mrs. A.G. Caris. During her life at Lebanon, N.Y., she was a member of the Congregational Church. Upon her removal to Grant Park, she became a charter member of the Baptist Church of that place. This membership was later removed toAmes, Iowa. On at he first day of October 1910, her spirit freed of its mortal limitations, took on a larger existence, although it left behind it those whose hearts with sorrow break, none would call back from the gates of heaven, the soul whose earthly pilgrimage is done. The high order of her intelligence, the nobility of her ideals, and the loving kindness of her heart have left impressions which will last throughout eternity." Moving west changed Mary's life in many ways. She had the responsibilities of a farmer's wife in a developing part of the country. And when her duahgter Lillian died in childbirth, she became the prime "parent" for Lillian and Stephen's daughter Mary Gertrude. After Mary Gertrude's graduation from High School in Story Iowa and her her father's re-marriage, it was decided that she and her granddaughter would move to Ohio to helped Mary's ill and widowed son. As Mary she grew older and no longer was wanted to to live alone and away from familly, she moved to Defiance, Ohio where she lived with her granddaughter and her granddaughter's family untl her death.

Stewart-10278 and Stewart-12608 appear to represent the same person because: These definitely look like duplicates without much conflicting info at all.
