Biography

Margaret was a daughter of Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, and his (first) wife, Margaret Graham.[1] The date of her birth is unknown, but thought to have been before 1374, based on the date of her marriage sometime before December 1393.

She married (as his second wife) Sir John Swinton.[1] Swinton's first wife, Margaret, daughter of Donald, Earl of Mar, died sometime between 5 December 1389 and 22 November 1393.[2]

John Swinton died 14 September 1402 at the Battle of Homildon. [1]

There were children from this marriage,[1] and more research needs to be done on this profile to identify them.

Research Notes

  • Margaret was originally connected as the wife of Laurence Abernethy, 1st Lord Saltoun, but according to The Scots Peerage the family name of Lord Saltoun's wife was unknown.[3] Absent any other reliable source proving this connection, he has been removed as Margaret's husband. Thank you for pointing this out, Sandra. I've also added a more reliable source than the two compilations you list, Scots Peerage, which also suggests that her parents are unknown and not the ones currently shown here. The Arbroath team will be looking into this further. If you (or anyone) find sources that indicate who her parents are, please let us know. It appears that the original source for these parents was an Ancestry Tree which has been removed as an unsourced item.

http://www.thepeerage.com/p10797.htm#i107970 Shows that Margaret Stewart married Sir John de Swinton of that Ilk, Lord of Mar. It cites Alison Weir, Britain's Royal Families: The Complete Genealogy (London, U.K.: The Bodley Head, 1999), page 218, and Mosley, Charles, editor. Chris, thepeerage.com is not considered a reliable source for pre-1500 profiles. See:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Scotland_-_Reliable_Sources#Unreliable_Sources. And Burke's is also an unreliable source.
