Catherine Stewart was born about 1748 in Bladen, North Carolina. Catherine was the first child of Patrick Stewart & Elizabeth Menzies to be born in America. She first married William Little of Edenton, N. Carolina in 1764 at about age 16. They had one daughter, Elizabeth Little, born 14 Nov 1765, who married Dr. Morgan Brown in 1784.
Catherine's second marriage in 1774 was to John Speed of Anson County (later in 1779, this part of Anson County was named Richmond County east of the Pee Dee River), North Carolina.
John Speed was a captain and later a lieutenant colonel during the American Revolution War and served in the Richmond County, North Carolina Militia (formerly part of Anson County).

Children of Catherine Stewart and her husband John Speed
"Catherine and Her Children.
Catherine, the second child of Patrick Stewart, was born in Scotland and came to America with her parents very young. She was married to William Little, then of South Carolina, December the 25th, 1764, and by whom she had one daughter, Elizabeth, born November the 24th, 1765, and married to Morgan Brown, the writer of these sketches, January 22nd, 1784. William Little died in the latter part of the year 1766, and Catherine after living a widow several years married John Speed in Jul 1774, by whom she had two children, a son called James and a daughter named Sarah...." Note: Although I have great regard for Dr Morgan Brown, I am using the reference Descendants of William & Col. John & William Terrel & Robert Wages Speed from the Book, by Charles S. Speed, Call of A Distant Drum in the succeeding reference, because in Dr. Brown's own account he states that "Patrick Stewart, with his wife and two or three children and his younger brother William Stewart, came to North Carolina in the year 1739. He landed at Wilmington, and first settled at a place called Brown Marsh, in Bladen County. How many years he continued there is not now known, but after the marriage of his daughter Catherine to William Little he removed to South Carolina at the Cheraws, where he died about the year 1772." Given that, Elizabeth, who was born after 1639 by other accounts, could not have been one of those children. She married John Speed in July 1774 at about age 26. (Jones-43207)
Marriage Notes: Reference: Book, by Charles S. Speed, Call of A Distant Drum page # 15 records Catherine Stewart Little as John's first wife; page # 16, second paragraph records Elizabeth Vosberg as John's second wife. (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~speedo/william/d1.htm#i9501)
The early history of the Speed and Stewart families indicates a closeness and strong link during the late 1700's in the old Cheraws District of North Carolina. (http://www.chuckspeed.com/A%20Genealogy%20History%20of%20John%20Speed%20and%20Catherine%20Stewart.htm Catherine Stewart)
