James (Stewart) First Earl of Moray is Notable.
James (Stewart) First Earl of Moray is a member of Clan Stewart.

James was the illegitimate son of James IV of Scotland and his mistress Janet Kennedy.[1]

1501: created Earl of Moray

James had a varied relationship with his half-brother James V, and was imprisoned for a time. In February 1531, James V gave him a commission to negotiate with rebels in Scottish Isles and offer them pardons for future obedience.

The 16th century historian John Lesley praised this Earl for his diplomatic skills. He had homes in Edinburgh, Balnageith near Forres, Elgin and Darnaway Castle. He wrote a will in June 1540, when he was planning to travel to France for the sake of his health.

He married Elizabeth, daughter of Colin Campbell, 3rd Earl of Argyll and Jean Gordon in Aug 1529.[2] They had issue:

  1. Mary, m. John Stewart, Master of Buchan. Divorced 12 Sep 1560. No issue. She died childless. [2]
  2. Elizabeth, Countess of Moray m. John Gordon, 11th Earl of Sutherland but died c.1548.[citation needed]

Illegitimate Children:

  1. James by Marion Stewart[2][3]
  2. Elizabeth[2]

James d.s.p.m. on 12 Jun 1544.[1]

  • He should not be confused with the two later and better-known 16th century Earls of Moray who were also called James Stewart:
  1. his nephew James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray -- Regent during the minority of James VI;
  2. and this nephew's son-in-law James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Moray, who was The Bonny Earl of Murray of the famous ballad.

Stewart-1655 and Stewart-1155 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same birthplace, same time frame, associated with people who died at Flodden Field
Stuart-736 and Moray-36 are not ready to be merged because: Not sure they are the same - much of the data is different.

If someone else is sure they are the same, I will approve the merge.
