Mary Stewart was born at Stirling Castle on 13 May 1453, the eldest daughter of James II of Scotland and Marie Guelders. Her father died by an exploding cannon in 1460. Mary's mother died in 1463, leaving her an orphan at the age of ten. Mary was married to Thomas Boyd in April 1467> She was very young almost fourteen years old. She was given the The Isle of Arran as her dowry. Thomas Boyd was created Earl of Arran. They moved to Law Castle. In 1469, Thomas was sent to escort King James's future consort Princess Margaret from Denmark to Scotland. While he was away the enemies of the Boyd clan brought false charges of treason against Thomas and his brother, Alexander. When Mary heard that Thomas was to be summoned before the king and Parliament to answer the charges, she went to the harbour of Leith to warn her husband.

Thomas and Mary sailed to Denmark. On 22 November 1469 he was declared guilty, and his title, honours, and estates given to the crown. Mary would return to Scotland to have her husband's name cleared. Once she arrived in Scotland, King James detained her in custody in Dean Castle at Kilmarnock. Mary's marriage to Thomas was declared void in 1473. Thomas and Mary had 2 children together. In 1474, Mary married James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton, who was almost 40 years older than Mary. She was his second wife. They had three children. Mary died in May 1488 at the age of thirty-five.
