Biography

Rebecca was Rhodam M. Griggs' second wife. She would have been about 18 years old when she married him, and took on his household which included 8 children from his first wife, the eldest known of which was a daughter roughly her own age.

By 1870 Rebecca was about 37 years old and had seven living children ranging in age from 18 to 2 years. It is not known whether this marriage was her first or second. None of these children are recorded in the 1870 census under a different surname than Griggs. All of them are of an age to have been born after the marriage in early 1851. It is presently not known whether she had any children from an earlier marriage. This record was taken on 5 August 1870.

Rebecca was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census for District 730, Douglas County, Georgia, as a 45-year-old widow, heading a farm household and living with four of her eight known children. These were: "Gennie Bell" (age 19), Lee (a son, age 13), who was working as a farm laborer, John (11) and Robert (8). There is a notation, "liver disease" on the line for John. All members of the household are listed as having been born in Georgia. Both of Rebecca's parents are also recorded as having been born in Georgia. This record was taken on 8 June 1880.
