Research Notes

There has been much speculation about the origin of John Stewart, said to have been born in Berwickshire, Scotland about 1695. Pat M. Stevens had made a summary of all the issues in her User Home Page Book: Four Centuries in the New World: Volume One Part A: The Stewarts - Descendants of John Stewart : generation no:1 [1] Speaking of a son of the John Stewart discussed here, the author begins "I have found no comfort in John Stewart's Stewart antecedents. Indeed, we are not certain that our John is the one born in October 1734 in Bristol Parish, Prince George's County. There were many Stewarts in early Virginia. The discussion below ..... explores several opportunities for his background."

Possible & disputed father - James Fitzjames STEWART, Duke of Berwick (1670-1734).

From Nathaniel Floyd - "Beyond a reasonable doubt the first Col. John Stewart who came to Virginia from Scotland, Mourning Floyd's husband's great-grandfather - was a younger son of the Duke of Berwick, born in Berwick Castle, and cousin of Henry Stewart, Earl of Lennox, whose son, Henry Stewart, married his cousin, Mary Stewart, Queen of Scots. They were all reared in Berwickshire and were all descendants of Walter (Fitzalan) Stewart, the sixth "Grand Steward of Scotland." pp74 Bio-Genealogies of the VA- Ky Floyd Families. see here [2] for a discussion of this proposition in Rootsweb

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

For anyone researching this line, the Floyds, and/or possible connections to the Duke of Berwick, I have a blog here: https://mygeniblog.com/

Could we add a link to James (Fitzjames) FitzJames (1670-1734) in the biography as is done to facilitate research with other controversial connection theories? There seems to be a shortage of original sources for this couple. There are other theories regarding the parents of John William Stewart. I’ve casually researched this couple for 15 years and only encountered the Fitzjames theory today.

There is a kind of consensus on other sites that daughter Sarah Stewart (abt.1733-) Is the wife of Samuel Leiper Taylor (abt.1742-1786) which would make her the same person as Sarah (Stewart) Taylor (1744-1800). As I’m writing this I am not aware of any sources that justify that connection either.

If there is no objection after a reasonable time I will add the Fitzjames link myself.

It looks like Linda did that for you. Thank you for the suggestion. See John's comment below. At one time, James (Fitzjames) FitzJames (1670-1734) was listed as the father, but was removed.

I've removed James FitzJames, Duke of Berwick and his first wife Honora de Burgh as the parents of this profile. It is not just uncertain but totally impossible for them to be the parents of John William Stewart. See my answer with sources on the G2G question of 13 Nov 2022. Nathaniel Floyd's comment on this page, has the chronology very incorrect, as the Duke of Berwick was the great great grandson of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her first husband Henry Stewart, any child of his could not possibly be a cousin of Henry Stewart, Earl of Lennox.

Please don't add them again.

Thank you John
