Duncan died while his father, Allan was still alive and the 3rd of Appin. In fact, his death appears to have been quite horrible, as it was told that while crossing the river Nevis near Ft. William, a M 'Arthur struck off his head with an ax (Stewarts of Appin, by John H. J. Stewart, p. 109.). One of the most detailed references for the Appin Stewarts is the "Stewarts of Appin" by John H.A. Stewart. This record still provides the title 4th of Appin to Duncan despite his death occurring before his father's. Other sources, like Stirnet, do not recognize Duncan as the 4th of Appin but instead pass that title to his one and only son John which would have occurred at the time of the death of Allan, the 3rd of Appin.
