Biography

Robert was only about 4 when his parents brought him to America and settled in Virginia. . He was the son of James Stewart and Mary Ann Lafferty. He married Elizabeth Cartmell on 18 Aug 1762 in Augusta County. They settled in the Cowpasture where he built a mill and store on Stuart's Creek where he had 300 acres.

He served as a deputy sheriff in 1779. Then, he, his wife, and children traveled to Tennessee between the years 1783 and 1790. He was back home in the Bath County census in 1791.

The children of Robert and Elizabeth (not necessarily in birth order) are:

  • Mary Ann, m. Alexander Miller
  • Martha,
  • Lydia, sent to North Carolina to avoid the Indian Wars
  • Katherine, sent to North Carolina to avoid the Indian Wars
  • Charles, born in Tennessee; was Justice of the Peace in 1809, commissioner in 1827, moved to Cabell, WV, then on to Kentucky.
  • Jannett, m. Samuel McMullen on 20 Jun 1796
  • John, m. Ellie Randolph, dau. of Dr. Randolph, MD, of the Virginia Randolph's (Possibly Dr. John Mann Randolph)
  • James, m. 1) ? and 2) Nancy Moore, dau. of Samuel and Margaret Moore, sister of Mary.
  • Robert, Jr. , m. 1) Mary, widow of John Armstrong and 2) Catherine Aleshire, dau. of Benjamin.

Stewart-209 and Stewart-13973 are not ready to be merged because: There must be sources for this profile to see if there should be made corrections to "William Robert" and "Sarah Elizabeth Cartmill" in order to merge them or if they are just two different couples.
