James Stewart was born about 1680 in Scotland. In an 1818 letter of Joseph Stewart, grandson of Robert Stewart and Jannette Forsythe, Joseph make remarks suggesting that Old James Stewart is believed to have been related to Robert Stewart in some way, but the nature of their kinship is unknown. The parentage of Old James Stewart is unknown. [1]

He died on 20 Sep 1773 and was buried at Chandler Hill Cemetery, Colrain, Franklin County Massachusetts, British Colonial America.

He may have been related to "Charter John" Stewart of Londonderry,NH, but this is not at all certain. James came to Colrain,MA in 1742, when he and his son-in-law Thomas McGee bought a settling lot in the first division, James taking the northern half, and McGee the southern half.

We now know (May 2023) that this James Stewart carried the yDNA SNP FT223221 (ZZ52_1). This makes him a descendant of the Lairds of Blackhall/Ardgowan in Renfrewshire, Scotland.

There is no evidence that Lieut. James Stewart was a son of Robert Stewart, Covenanter. They are said in early letters to have been related, but the exact nature of their kinship is unknown. Unfortunately the parentage of Lieut. James Stewart is unknown.

Stewart-14207 and Stewart-14398 since merged into 14207

Stewart-14207 and Stewart-14398 appear to represent the same person because: SAME NAME, SAME LOCATION, same birth year, traveled same places as John Stewart, involved with Clark's.
