James was born in 1880. He was the son of Robert Stewart and Caroline McMasters. In 1900, the family was living in North Braddock borough, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.[1] James was living with his widowed mother in 1910, still in North Braddock borough, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.[2]
James registered for the WWI draft in 1918. He was working as a machinist for Remington Arms at the time. He listed a Mildred Stewart as his nearest relative.His physical description was noted as medium height and build with brown eyes and Black hair.[3]
