James Stewart
Biography
He graduated from Boise High School in 1932 and went for two years to Linfield College at McMinnville, OR. He managed a service station in Boise, then went to Vale just across the state line in Oregon and worked in a lumber yard. It was Depression times and jobs were scarce. He signed up with M-K, the Boise-based construction firm that built many of the Pacific Island air strips as war defense preparations. He was employed eight months on a project in Samoa, then returned to Vale. He was drafted in 1942 into the Field Artillery. Allen and Betty's first home was in Oklahoma. Then, with his lieutenant bars, it was Allen's turn to go overseas. His unit landed in Italy about half way up the "boot." They had worked their way north when Italy surrendered and found themselves on occupation duty in Trieste. Allen was discharged with captain's rank in 1946. They lived in Boise some months. Betty was teaching second grade in a Boise school. They tried Vale again where a job was waiting, but moved to Pendleton, OR and a position with Georgia Pacific Lumber Company. Allen worked in the pine division headquarters at nearby Pilot Rock until the offices were moved to Coeur d'Alene, ID. The company divided and that office became part of Louisiana Pacific. Allen retired as comptroller for Louisiana Pacific in June 1979. They were happy to leave Coeur d'Alene's cold winters for Portland, OR where most of their five children had settled. They have been active members of Presbyterian churches in Pendleton, Coeur d'Alene, and Portland.
