Biography

Walter (Stewart) Stewart Ist of Morphie is a member of Clan Stewart.
This profile is part of the Stewart Name Study.

Walter was the son of Walter Stewart, Master of Fife and Janet Erskine.[1][2][3]

He married Elizabeth Arnot.[3] They had issue:

  1. Alexander[2][3]
  2. Andrew[2]
  3. John, ancestor of the Stewarts of Culbeg and Garchoile[2][3]
  4. Unknown, ancestor of the Stuarts of Inchbrek and Johnston[2]
  5. George[3]
  6. Isobel, m. Andrew Cunningham of Drumquhassel[3]
  7. Margaret, m. Ninian Bonar of Garthpot[3][4]
  8. Mariota, m. John Mure, son and heir apparent of the Lord of Rowallan[5]

Research Notes

  • MacGregor makes several errors listing the daughters married to Cunningham and Bonar[3] as follows:
    1. The daughter who married Cunningham of Drumquhassell is said to be named 'Margaret' and that she married 'Alexander' but in his treatment of Cunningham of Drumquhassel, the only marriage to a Stewart is 'Andrew' who married 'Isobel'. [6] This name 'Isobel' seems to conflict wtih the daughter married to Bonar (see next) Although certainly not a reliable souce, Clan MacFarlane while not naming the daughter, does link her to Andrew rather than Alexander Cunningham'
    2. The daughter who married Ninan Bonar is named 'Isabell' but the source is the Protocol Book of the Burgh of Stirling where she is unnamed.[4] The Protocol Book also indicates that Ninian is 'of Garthpot' where MacGregor has 'of Keltie.' That she is unnamed helps to resolve the conflict with the name of the daughter who married Cunningham of Drumquhassell.

Stewart-15606 and Stewart-14760 appear to represent the same person because: clear duplicate

Steuart-159 and Stewart-14760 are not ready to be merged because: The two profiles have different mothers who possibly should have been merged but the request was rejected. On the patrilineal line, there is a John who had a half brother John and possibly those two should be merged. Many of the profiles in question are unsourced so finding sources would be a good step to take before trying to merge.
