William was born in Illinois in 1879 toWilliam Stewart and Elizabeth Crackel. In 1900, the family was living in Urbana Township, Urbana city, Champaign, Illinois.[1]
He registered for the WWI draft in 1918 in Champaign County, Illinois.[2] He worked as a car repairman for the Big 4 Railroad. He was tall and stout with blue eyes and dark hair.
