John Stewart was the son of John Stewart and Grizel (Rattray) Stewart[1] born after 1530.[2] He was the son of John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Atholl and Grizel Rattray, Countess of Atholl. He succeeded to the title of 4th Earl of Atholl circa 1542.[3] He was invested as a Privy Counsellor in Scotland in 1561.[3]
John Stewart, 4th Earl of Atholl, called the Fair, was a Scottish nobleman and courtier. He was favoured by Mary, Queen of Scots, but later turned against her.
He fought in the Battle of Corrichie in 1562. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of the North in 1565. He was a zealous Roman Catholic.[3] He held the office of Chancellor for Scotland between 29 March 1578 and 24 April 1579.[3]
He died on 24 April 1579 at Kincardine Castle, Auchterarder, Perth, Scotland, suspected of poisioning.[2] He was buried on 4 July 1579 at St. Giles' Church, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.[2]
He married, firstly, Lady Elizabeth Gordon, daughter of George Gordon, 4th Earl of Huntly and Elizabeth Keith, before 26 May 1547.[3] They had issue:
He married, secondly, Margaret Fleming, daughter of Malcolm Fleming, 3rd Lord Fleming and Janet Stewart, on 1 April 1557.[3] They had issue:
John passed away on 25 April 1579.
