Biography

Mary Stewart was born about 19 June 1859 in Brooklyn, New York.[1] Her parents were James Stewart and Martha Brown.

Census records between 1860 and 1875 show Mary living with her parents and sisters at several different addresses in Brooklyn.[2][3][4] Her father, James Stewart, is listed as a Day Laborer. In 1880[5], Mary is shown to be working in a pencil case factory.

Mary Stewart married Edward W. Freeth on 22 December 1880.[6] Their known children are:

Throughout the 1880s and 90s, the Freeth family lived at 146 Court Street, Brooklyn, where Edward Freeth worked as a jeweller.[10] By 1900, they'd moved to an address on Fifth Avenue[11], where they lived for at least another decade[12] before shifting to 829 Union Street[13][14], then 7th Street[15], and finally 15th Street.[16]

Mary and Edward Freeth were registered members of the Pacific Street Methodist Episcopal Church until the latter's dismissal in March 1891.[17] Later, they became parishioners of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church (now known as St. John - St. Matthew - Emmanuel) on the corner of 6th Avenue and 2nd Street, Brooklyn.

Mary Stewart Freeth died on 4 August 1937.[18] She was buried in the family plot in Green-Wood Cemetery.[19]

Research Notes

Her death certificate lists her birth year as 1864, and this may have been the date she used during her life, but this cannot be right since she is listed with her family as a 1-year-old child in the 1860 census. I have estimated her birth year to be about 1859. - Freeth-52 17:49, 7 January 2017 (EST)

It looks like she and her husband were both working at a pencil case factory in 1880; perhaps that's where they met? - Freeth-52 17:49, 7 January 2017 (EST)
