John Stewart was born before 1629 (5th Baron Castle Stewart) he was the second son of Andrew Stewart (3rd Lord Stewart of Ochiltree) and Margaret Kennedy.

He succeeded to the title of 5th Baron Castle Stewart, of co. Tyrone on 2 December 1662.

He died in 1685, unmarried.

John Stewart remained unmarried throughout his life.
