Alexander Stewart was born in 1753 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was the son of Allen William Stewart (1730 – ?) and his wife Isabella Crawford (1730 – ?).
He was baptised on 9 April 1769 in Lismore, Argyll, Scotland.
He emigrated to British Colonial America arriving in 1774 in Hampton, Virginia.
He died on 23 March 1853 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (aged 100 years) and was buried at Pioneer Cemetery, Middle Musquodoboit, Halifax County. Nova Scotia, Canada.
