Charles Stewart (5th Earl of Traquair) was born on 31 March 1697. He was the son of Charles Stewart (4th Earl of Traquair) and Mary Maxwell.
Charles gained the title of 5th Earl of Traquair. In 1739 he was the co-founder of the Scottish Jacobite Association but despite preparing for the 1745 uprising he did not participate in it.
In August 1746 he was held in the Tower of London on suspicion of complicity in the uprising, until Feb 1748 when he was set free, having not been brought to trial, on bail of £30,000 (over £2,000,000 in todays terms).
Before 19 May 1746 Charles Stewart was married to Theresa Conyers the daughter of Sir Baldwin Conyers (4th Baronet) and his wife Margaret Nevill.
Charles died on 24 April 1764 at age 67 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland and was buried on 1 May 1764 at Traquair, Peebles-shire, Scotland.
