Jane Stewart Green (b Gordon Janette Stewart) was born March 14, 1931 in Greene County, Mississippi. [1] She was the fifth daughter of Russell Stewart and Vermel Henderson Stewart At age 7 her mother died and she was raised by her older sisters.[2] During the war she lived with and worked with a nearby family doing housework while attending school.
When Jane was 15, her sister Millie gave her bus fare to come live with her in Seattle. She enrolled in Queen Anne High School where she would meet Jack Green her future husband and was involved in youth activities at nearby Queen Anne Baptist Church.
They were married in 1950 [3]and she worked for the telephone company for several years before they had their son Chris. In 1958 they moved to Ballard where they would live for the next 57 years, adding daughter Katie to the family. Jack worked as school teacher (and later principal) and they would spend the summers going on the road and camping in their Shasta trailer.
Jane spent a number of years as an instructor at North Seattle Community College (now North Seattle College) teaching typing and computer basics. Four grandchildren were born in the 1980’s: Aubrey, Amber, Alex, and John.
In 1990's the trailer was replaced by a Home and Park RV and they spent time touring the U.S., often taking family members with them.
In 2000 Jane was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and underwent treatment. While at the time, this type of cancer had a fairly low survival rate, she underwent a new type of surgery and the cancer went into remission.
In her later years she enjoyed reading, walks around Green Lake and swim classes at the Green Lake Aquatic center. Her great-granddaughters Karin and Olivia brought her joy.
In November 2015 Jack and Jane celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary, but her health had begun to deteriorate and she passed away early on December 3rd. [4][5][6][7]
