Robert Stewart was born about 1820 in Pennsylvania, United States. He was the son of Jesse Stewart (1789–1856) and his wife, Jane Jefferson (1792–1850).

He died on 7 May 1883 in Harrison Township, Gallia County, Ohio, USA and was buried in Mercerville, Gallia County, Ohio, USA.
