Note
Note: Notes for REBECCA STEWART:
& Rebecca divorced. Joseph remarried and moved to Gibson Co. IN. Rebecca died in the summer of 1825; never Remarried
1810 census of Montgomery County, Kentucky lists a Rebecca Whitesides and three children under the age of ten. In her will, probated in 1825, she names her three children: Stewart, Isaac, and Polly Summers. This would indicate that the two boys were born after 1805. Descendants of Polly Summers provided Mrs. Pauline Maciejewski with the names of John through Polly; however, their sources are not known.
Information per Kathy Whitsett: Polly was Joseph and Rebecca's daughter. Mary Polly Whitsett. She went by polly. #2, Rebecca never remarried after she and Joseph divorced. Mary Polly Whitsett their daughter married to a Caleb Summer and they removed to Mo.
Notes for JOSEPH WHITSITT and REBECCA STEWART: The Clark County marriage bond names James Whiteside and Rebecca Stewart. It seems clear, that Joseph was the husband of Rebecca Stewart. Perhaps his full name was Joseph James Whitsett, or James Joseph and he preferred to be called Joseph, or just named James Whitsitt and had a nick name for "Joseph". Joan Benton: It was also suggested that perhaps his name was written carelessly as what looked like "Jas" interpreted as James. However the only James Whitsett of appropriate age then lived in a different county of KY and was married to someone else.
In April , 1803 Joseph Whitesitt (sic) placed a notice in the Kentucky Gazette (published in Lexington) that his wife Rebecca had left him and he would not pay her bills. After April 1803 Joseph divorced Rebecca. Joseph remarried around 1806 to Mary LeMasters.
Notes for MARY LEMASTERS: Mary Lemasters maiden name is unknown, She was married to a Mr. Lemasters before marrying Joseph Whitsitt.
Marriage Notes for JOSEPH WHITSITT and MARY LEMASTERS: It is very possible that Joseph and Mary only enjoyed their marriage for a few short months before Joseph's death which was probably and unfortunately in the same year they were married.
I would like to make some changes to the last paragraph. Mary Lemasters' maiden name was Mary Polly Langston. She married Benjamin Lemasters 21 Sep 1796 in Clark Co., KY. (Later Montgomery Co. was formed from Clark Co.) They had five children, the last of whom was born in 1804. Benjamin died in ~ 1805 (details unknown).
His widow Mary married Joseph Whitsett in about 1806. Their first child, Benjamin, was born in Montgomery Co., KY 22 Oct 1808. Within a few years they moved to Gibson Co., IN and had several more children. Some of those children maintained contained with Joseph's children from his first marriage. They moved to Lafayette Co., MO where Mary Polly Whitsett Summers, husband, and family lived. Some letters between the children remain.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Rebecca by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Rebecca:
Ancestry.com Family Trees has Mary Lemasters Whitsett's maiden name as Mary Polly Langston, daughter of Jacob and Mary Elizabeth Langston. Mary Polly married Benjamin Lemasters 21 Sep 1796 in Clark Co., KY (listed in KY Marriage Records). Her father died Jan 1804 and mother 18 Mar 1833, both in Bourbon Co., KY.
I descend from Stewart Whitsett described here. A few years ago a male Whitsett cousin had a DNA test with the Whitesides (including Whitsetts) organization. It was found that he definitely did not descend from Joseph Whitsett. Unfortunately identification of Stewart's father appears to be unknown.
