James Stewart, 1st Earl of Arran was born circa 1553 at of Bothwellmuir, Kilcoy & Newton, Scotland. he was the son of Andrew Stewart and his wife Agnes Cunningham.

He married Elizabeth Stewart, daughter of John Stewart, 23rd Earl of Atholl and Elizabeth Gordon, on 6 July 1581. They had issue:

  1. Henry. b. bef. 1590 - d. aft. 1600
  2. James. b. aft. 1581 - d. 1658

He was assasinated by James Douglas of Parkjead, the nephew of Regent Morton and died on 1 December 1595 at Symontown, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
