Walter (Stewart) First Earl of Atholl is a member of the House of Stewart.
Walter's actual birth date is unknown but as he was first married before 1378 it is probable he was born before 1360.
Always a supporter of the king James I, Walter eventually turned against the monarch and plotted his assassination in 1437. He was tried for murder, severely tortured and finally executed on March 26, 1437 in Edinburgh.

He held the office of Great Justicar of Scotland.
On 26 March 1437 his honours and estates were declared forfeit.
Research Notes
Alleged Marriage to Elizabeth Graham:
Both The Exchequer Rolls of Scotland[1] and The Scots Peerage[2] list only one wife for Walter Stewart, and she is Margaret Barkley. Douglas Richardson[3] and Alison Weir[4] acknowledge that on 1 August 1404 Walter was granted a papal dispensation to marry Elizabeth Graham, but Weir states there is no evidence the marriage ever took place and Richardson asserts flatly that it never happened. Lacking any evidence to the contrary, Elizabeth Graham will be detached from this profile as a spouse of Walter Stewart. Stevens-17832 20:14, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
